What CO2 Laser Resurfacing Is and How It Works

CO2 LASER RESURFACING USES ABLATIVE LASER ENERGY TO REMOVE CONTROLLED AREAS OF DAMAGED SKIN AND STIMULATE COLLAGEN REMODELING. HELIX by Cartessa uses a 10,600 nm CO2 laser for fractional ablative resurfacing. The laser removes controlled areas of damaged surface tissue while also stimulating collagen remodeling below, helping improve concerns such as acne scars, etched lines, sun damage, and uneven texture.

Fractional CO2 resurfacing treats microscopic areas of skin while leaving surrounding tissue untreated to support healing. This allows providers to adjust treatment intensity without treating the entire skin surface uniformly.

At GENEVA, treatment depth is personalized to your skin, concerns, and recovery goals. A lighter CO2 protocol may focus on superficial resurfacing, while deeper or blended treatment can be considered for more established scars and texture concerns. HELIX allows its CO2 and non-ablative technologies to be adjusted or combined based on skin type, concerns, and healing tolerance.

Topical numbing goes on first, and we let it work properly.

Is CO2 Laser Resurfacing right for you?

CO2 laser resurfacing may be appropriate for patients looking to improve more established concerns such as acne scars, etched lines, sun damage, or uneven texture. Treatment intensity and candidacy depend on your skin type and tone, goals, and ability to accommodate recovery.

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing can improve the appearance of certain acne scars by removing damaged surface tissue and stimulating remodeling in the treated skin. Your provider will assess your scar type before recommending treatment.

CO2 resurfacing can improve sun-damaged skin, uneven texture, and visible discoloration by resurfacing controlled areas of damaged tissue. Treatment depth is adjusted to the severity of the concern and your recovery goals.
Deeper CO2 resurfacing involves more visible recovery than lighter or non-ablative treatments. If minimizing downtime is a priority, your provider may recommend a lighter CO2 protocol or another HELIX option instead.

CO2 laser resurfacing can soften the appearance of established fine lines and wrinkles by resurfacing damaged skin and stimulating collagen remodeling. Your provider will determine whether resurfacing or another treatment better fits the type of lines you have.

Laser resurfacing may improve the appearance of certain mature surgical or traumatic scars by blending texture and remodeling treated tissue. Scar type, thickness, color, and maturity all influence whether CO2 resurfacing is appropriate.
CO2 laser resurfacing requires careful evaluation in deeper skin tones because ablative treatment can carry a greater risk of pigment changes. Your provider will assess whether CO2 is appropriate and may recommend more conservative settings or a gentler resurfacing approach.

CO2 vs. Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing

CO2 resurfacing is ablative, meaning it removes controlled areas of damaged surface tissue. Non-ablative laser resurfacing delivers heat below the surface without removing the outer layer. CO2 is generally the more intensive option, while non-ablative treatment typically involves less recovery and may be performed as a series. HELIX can also blend its CO2 and 1570 nm technologies in a Fusion treatment when both surface resurfacing and deeper collagen remodeling are appropriate.

For some patients, Fusion combines ablative CO2 and non-ablative 1570 nm treatment in one session. Your provider will determine whether CO2 alone, non-ablative resurfacing, or a blended approach best matches your concerns and preferred recovery time.

Sessions Needed
Often performed as a series
Result Per Session
Develop gradually with collagen remodeling
Comfort
Generally less intensive

What to Expect: Before, During and After

A CO2 laser resurfacing appointment at GENEVA typically takes 45 to 60 minutes, including numbing time. Here’s what to expect from preparation through healing and follow-up.

  1. 1

    Preparation (before your visit)

Follow your provider’s instructions about retinoids, exfoliating acids, medications, and other treatments before CO2 laser resurfacing. Begin the pretreatment product your provider recommends 4 weeks before your appointment, and stop retinoids and exfoliating acids 5 to 7 days before. Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure, and tell us if you have a history of cold sores.

  2. 2

    Consultation and skin assessment

Your provider evaluates your skin type and tone, treatment history, concerns, and recovery goals before selecting the CO2 protocol and treatment intensity.

  3. 3

    Numbing (about 30 minutes)

Topical numbing is applied before treatment to help keep you comfortable. We allow enough time for it to take effect before beginning.

  1. 4

The treatment (20 to 30 minutes)

The HELIX handpiece passes over the treatment area using fractional CO2 settings personalized to your skin and concerns. You may feel warmth, prickling, or a stronger heat sensation depending on treatment intensity.

  2. 5

    Immediately after

Redness, warmth, tightness, swelling, and peeling can occur after CO2 laser resurfacing. Follow your GENEVA aftercare instructions closely, keep the treated skin protected, and avoid unnecessary sun exposure while healing.

  3. 6

    Healing and results

Healing time depends on treatment intensity and area. As the skin recovers, improvements in texture, tone, scars, and fine lines continue to develop through collagen remodeling. Your provider will assess your progress at follow-up and determine whether another treatment is appropriate.

Skin Rejuvenation & Anti-Aging at Geneva Exosome Therapy in Alpharetta

CO2 laser resurfacing is an ablative laser treatment that removes controlled areas of damaged skin while stimulating collagen remodeling. Fractional CO2 resurfacing treats microscopic areas of skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact to support healing. It can help improve acne scars, fine lines, sun damage, and uneven skin texture.

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treats microscopic areas of the skin rather than resurfacing the entire treatment area uniformly. Leaving surrounding skin untreated helps support the healing process while still allowing for meaningful resurfacing. Recovery depends on the treatment depth, area treated, and individual healing response.

GENEVA Med uses HELIX by Cartessa, a skin resurfacing platform that combines a 10,600 nm ablative CO2 laser with a 1570 nm non-ablative laser. This allows your provider to personalize treatment intensity and, when appropriate, combine ablative and non-ablative resurfacing through Fusion protocols.

Downtime after CO2 laser resurfacing depends on the treatment intensity and area treated. Lighter fractional CO2 treatments generally involve less visible recovery, while deeper treatments can cause more redness, swelling, peeling, and sensitivity as the skin heals. Your provider will explain the expected recovery for your specific treatment plan.

Topical numbing is used before CO2 laser resurfacing to help keep you comfortable. During treatment, you may feel warmth, prickling, or a stronger heat sensation depending on the area being treated and the intensity of your treatment.

The number of CO2 laser treatments needed for acne scars depends on the type and depth of the scars, your skin, and the intensity of each treatment. Some patients may see noticeable improvement after one session, while more established acne scarring may benefit from a series of treatments. Laser treatment can make scars less noticeable, but results vary by scar and patient.

You may begin noticing improvements as the treated skin heals, with results continuing to develop as collagen remodeling progresses. The timing and degree of improvement depend on your treatment depth, skin concern, and individual healing response.

CO2 laser resurfacing may be appropriate for some patients with deeper skin tones, but careful evaluation is important because laser treatments can carry a risk of temporary or permanent pigment changes. Your provider will evaluate your skin tone, treatment history, and goals and may recommend conservative settings or another resurfacing approach when appropriate. Pigment changes, including hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation, are recognized potential complications of laser treatment.

CO2 laser aftercare focuses on protecting the skin while it heals. Follow the skincare instructions provided by your GENEVA provider, avoid picking or exfoliating treated skin, and protect the area from unnecessary sun exposure. Your specific aftercare routine will depend on the intensity of your treatment.

CO2 laser resurfacing uses laser energy to remove controlled areas of damaged skin and stimulate collagen remodeling, while a chemical peel uses a chemical solution to exfoliate or remove layers of skin. Both can address concerns such as sun damage, uneven texture, and signs of aging, but the appropriate treatment depends on your skin, goals, desired intensity, and recovery time.

CO2 laser resurfacing, Botox, and dermal fillers can be part of the same overall aesthetic treatment plan, but they may not be performed at the same time. Your provider will recommend the appropriate order and timing based on the treatment areas, type of injectable, and intensity of your laser treatment.

GENEVA Med provides CO2 laser resurfacing services at 3275 North Point Pkwy #204 in Alpharetta, GA. We serve patients from Alpharetta, Johns Creek, and the greater Atlanta area and offer personalized consultations to determine the appropriate CO2 laser treatment for your skin concerns and goals. GENEVA’s Alpharetta address is confirmed on its current website.
