Lip Flip in Alpharetta

145+ 5-star reviews

A lip flip is a cosmetic treatment that uses a small amount of botulinum toxin above the upper lip to relax targeted muscles, allowing more of the upper lip to show when you smile. Unlike lip filler, a lip flip does not add volume—it creates a subtle change in lip shape and visibility.

  • Shows more of the upper lip when smiling without adding filler volume
  • May reduce the appearance of a gummy smile when upper-lip muscle movement contributes to it
  • No filler is placed inside the lip
  • Can be combined with lip filler when both lip show and added volume are desired
  • Upper lip appears thinner or less visible when smiling
  • Gummy smile related to upper-lip muscle movement
  • Upper lip turns inward or sits close to the teeth when smiling
  • Desire for more upper-lip show without added volume
  • Adults who want a subtle change in upper-lip shape or visibility rather than added volume
  • Patients interested in lip enhancement but not ready for filler
  • Patients who understand that a lip flip is temporary and generally does not last as long as lip filler
  • Patients whose main goal is lip show or shape rather than true volume

A lip flip is done with a neuromodulator, so the product is part of the decision. All four relax the same muscle. Above the lip what counts most is how far each one travels, because the muscles that shape your smile sit close by.

  • Botox. Holds close to where it is placed, which is what you want from the few units that go above the upper lip.
  • Dysport. Travels a little further from the injection point. An advantage on broad areas like the forehead, and something your injector weighs carefully this close to the mouth.
  • Xeomin. Purified down to the active molecule, and the option we turn to when someone has stopped responding to their usual product.
  • Daxxify. The longest lasting elsewhere on the face, though a lip flip is a small dose in a very mobile muscle, so it still fades sooner here than it would on the forehead.

Whichever we use, a lip flip fades sooner than neuromodulator treatment elsewhere on the face, usually in 6 to 8 weeks.

What a Lip Flip Is and How It Works

A LIP FLIP USES A SMALL AMOUNT OF BOTULINUM TOXIN AROUND THE UPPER LIP TO CREATE MORE LIP SHOW WITHOUT ADDING FILLER VOLUME.A lip flip works by temporarily relaxing targeted muscles around the upper lip. This allows the lip to roll slightly outward, or evert, so more of your existing upper lip becomes visible when you smile. No filler is injected into the lip, so the treatment does not add true volume.

At GENEVA Med, your provider evaluates your lip movement, smile, facial anatomy, and goals before deciding where and how much product to use. A lip flip is best suited to subtle changes in lip show or shape; patients who want noticeable added volume are generally better candidates for lip filler.

Results develop gradually after treatment and are temporary. Lip flip duration varies by patient, but the effect typically lasts a few months rather than the six to twelve months associated with many lip fillers.

The lip is mapped and marked before anything is injected.

Is a lip flip right for you?

A lip flip is a small treatment with a narrow set of ideal candidates. Here is what we look for, and what we would tell you honestly before booking one.

A lip flip can make more of the upper lip visible without adding filler volume. Small amounts of botulinum toxin relax targeted muscles around the upper lip, allowing the lip to roll slightly outward when you smile. Your natural lip volume stays essentially the same.

Some lip asymmetry is related to differences in muscle movement rather than lip volume or structure. When appropriate, carefully placed botulinum toxin may help create a more balanced appearance. Your provider will determine whether the asymmetry is movement-related and suitable for treatment.

Botulinum toxin may be used around the corners of the mouth when muscle activity contributes to a downturned appearance. This involves a different injection pattern than a standard upper-lip flip, so your provider will evaluate whether it should be included in your treatment plan.

Small amounts of botulinum toxin may sometimes be used to soften movement-related vertical lines above the upper lip. Treating these lines is not the same as a standard lip flip, but the two approaches may be considered together depending on your concerns and facial movement.

A lip flip can reveal slightly more of your existing upper lip, but it does not create true volume. If your lips are naturally thin and your goal is noticeably greater fullness, lip filler may be a better option or may be combined with a lip flip.
A lip flip may improve how much of the upper lip shows, but it does not replace volume lost with age. If age-related thinning is your primary concern, your provider may recommend lip filler or another treatment instead of—or in addition to—a lip flip.
A lip flip is designed for a subtle change. It may be a good fit if you want slightly more upper-lip show or a small change in how your lip sits when you smile without adding the fullness associated with filler.
If you have had lip filler before and want to reconsider your approach, a lip flip may provide a temporary, non-filler option in some cases. A lip flip does not dissolve or remove existing filler, so your provider will evaluate any previous treatment before recommending the best next step.

Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler

A lip flip and lip filler can both enhance the appearance of the lips, but they work in different ways. A lip flip uses a small amount of botulinum toxin to relax targeted muscles around the upper lip, allowing more of the existing lip to show. Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid gel to add true volume, shape, or definition. Some patients may benefit from one treatment, while others may combine both depending on their goals.

Lip flip pricing is based on the neurotoxin product and number of units recommended for your treatment. Lip filler is typically priced by syringe or treatment amount.

What to Expect

A lip flip is a quick injectable treatment with minimal downtime. Here’s what to expect from consultation and lip mapping through treatment, results, and follow-up.

  1. 1

    Preparation (before your visit)

Tell your provider about medications, supplements, previous neurotoxin treatments, and relevant health conditions before your appointment. Follow any specific preparation instructions provided by GENEVA and arrive with clean skin when possible.

  2. 2

    Consultation and lip mapping

Your provider evaluates your smile, upper-lip movement, facial anatomy, and treatment goals to determine whether a lip flip is appropriate and where the injections should be placed.

  3. 3

    Numbing (about 20 minutes)

Strong topical numbing is applied and left to work. Our fillers also contain lidocaine. Lips are the most sensitive area we treat, so we do not rush this.

  1. 4

The treatment (15 to 20 minutes)

A small amount of botulinum toxin is injected into targeted muscles around the upper lip using a fine needle. The exact number of injection points and units depends on your anatomy, smile, and treatment plan.

  2. 5

    Immediately after

Most patients have little to no downtime after a lip flip and can return to normal daily activities. Mild redness, tenderness, swelling, or bruising can occur around the injection sites. Follow your GENEVA provider’s specific aftercare instructions.

  3. 6

    Your two week follow up

Swelling resolves over the first week and the true shape appears by about day fourteen. We book this review for every patient and refine then if anything needs balancing.

Treatment Frequency

Finding Your Rhythm

Start conservatively

A half or full syringe placed well tells us how your lips hold product and how much change you actually want. Adding at a second visit is easy. Removing is a separate procedure.

6 to 12 mo

Ongoing maintenance

Lips metabolise filler faster than most areas because they move constantly and have a rich blood supply. Topping up before the shape fully disappears keeps the result consistent.

Long term

Less over time

Many long term patients find they need less product per visit once the shape is established, because each treatment builds on a base that has not fully resolved.

Combine Treatments

Your Journey, Continued

A lip flip changes how much of your upper lip shows. It does not change lip volume, texture or the skin around the mouth, which is why it is often planned alongside something that does.

A lip flip is a nonsurgical cosmetic treatment that uses small botulinum toxin injections around the upper lip. The treatment relaxes targeted muscles so the lip can roll slightly outward, allowing more of the existing upper lip to show without adding filler volume.

A lip flip changes how the upper lip sits by relaxing targeted muscles, while lip filler adds hyaluronic acid gel to create true volume, shape, and definition. A lip flip is generally better for subtle lip show; filler is usually better when the goal is noticeable fullness or structural enhancement.

A lip flip does not add true lip volume. Instead, it allows slightly more of your existing upper lip to show, which can make the lip appear fuller or more defined. If your goal is a meaningful increase in lip size, lip filler is generally the more appropriate treatment.

Lip flip results are temporary. Cleveland Clinic reports that the effects typically last about two to five months, although duration varies by patient, product, dose, and individual muscle activity.

A lip flip develops gradually as the botulinum toxin begins relaxing the targeted muscles. Patients may start noticing a change within several days, with the result becoming clearer over roughly the first week or two. Individual timing varies. Cleveland Clinic notes that the lip may look fuller after about one week.

A lip flip may help reduce the amount of gum that shows when smiling if overactivity of the upper-lip muscles contributes to the concern. Not every gummy smile has the same cause, so your provider should evaluate your smile and anatomy before recommending treatment.

The number of units used for a lip flip varies based on the botulinum toxin product, anatomy, muscle activity, and treatment goals. Small doses are generally used because the muscles around the mouth play an important role in speaking, drinking, and facial expression. Your injector will determine the appropriate dose rather than using a universal unit count.

At GENEVA Med in Alpharetta, lip flip pricing is based on the neurotoxin product and number of units recommended for your treatment. New-patient and membership pricing may also apply. Your provider will confirm the recommended dose and total cost before treatment.

A lip flip typically requires little downtime. Mild redness, tenderness, swelling, or bruising can occur around the injection sites, but most patients can return to normal daily activities soon after treatment. Follow your GENEVA provider’s specific aftercare instructions.

A lip flip cannot be dissolved or immediately reversed. If you are unhappy with the result, the effect generally has to wear off as the botulinum toxin gradually loses its effect. This is different from many hyaluronic-acid lip fillers, which can usually be dissolved with hyaluronidase.

Possible side effects include temporary redness, tenderness, bruising, swelling, or headache. If the muscles around the mouth relax more than intended, some patients may temporarily have difficulty with drinking, using a straw, speaking clearly, or controlling saliva until the effect wears off. Serious complications are uncommon but should be reviewed with your provider before treatment.

Botulinum toxin treatments are generally avoided during pregnancy because adequate safety data are lacking. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed, tell your provider before considering a lip flip so they can advise you appropriately. Cleveland Clinic specifically advises against a lip flip during pregnancy because safety has not been adequately studied.

Yes, some patients combine a lip flip with lip filler because the treatments address different goals. A lip flip can increase upper-lip show by changing muscle activity, while filler can add volume, shape, or definition. Your provider can determine whether one treatment or a combination better fits your goals.

GENEVA Med provides lip flip treatments in Alpharetta, serving patients from Alpharetta, Johns Creek, and the greater Atlanta area. Your provider will evaluate your smile, lip movement, anatomy, and goals to determine whether a lip flip, lip filler, or another treatment is the best fit.
