What Microneedling Is and How It Works

MICRONEEDLING, ALSO KNOWN AS COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY, USES ULTRA FINE MEDICAL GRADE NEEDLES TO CREATE CONTROLLED MICROCHANNELS IN THE SKIN. These micro-injuries trigger the skin’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.
When performed on its own, microneedling works through your skin’s natural healing response rather than adding volume or altering your features. Results develop gradually as new collagen forms. Over time, skin texture may appear smoother, acne scars softer, pores less noticeable, and the complexion more even.
Because microneedling works mechanically rather than using heat or light, it can be an option for a wide range of skin tones. Treatment depth is adjusted based on the area being treated, your skin, and your specific concerns.

Is Microneedling right for you?
Microneedling can be a good option for many healthy adults. Here’s how it may help with common skin concerns and what we consider before recommending treatment.
Microneedling With or Without PRF Serum
Microneedling can be performed on its own or paired with PRF as part of a personalized treatment plan. Your aesthetician will recommend the approach based on your skin concerns, treatment goals, and overall skin health.
Both options use the same microneedling technique. PRF is an optional addition rather than a separate treatment, and your provider will discuss whether it is appropriate for your specific concerns.

What to Expect: Before, During and After
A microneedling appointment at GENEVA typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, including numbing time. Here’s what to expect before, during, and after your treatment.
- 1
Preparation (before your visit)
Follow your provider’s instructions on when to pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, or other active skincare before treatment, and avoid excessive sun exposure. Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids 5 to 7 days before your appointment. Arrive with clean skin and no makeup. Let us know if you have a history of cold sores or any active skin concerns before your appointment.
- 2
Consultation and skin analysis
Your aesthetician assesses your skin, reviews your health history and goals, and creates a personalized treatment plan, including the recommended number of sessions and how far apart to schedule them.
- 3
Numbing (about 20 minutes)
A topical numbing cream is applied and given time to take effect, helping make the treatment more comfortable. We don’t rush this step.
- 4
The treatment (20 to 30 minutes)
A medical-grade microneedling device passes over each treatment area, with needle depth adjusted based on the area and your specific skin concerns. Most patients describe the sensation as light pressure and mild vibration.
- 5
Immediately after
Mild redness commonly improves within 24 to 48 hours, although recovery varies by patient and treatment intensity. Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your GENEVA team, which may include avoiding makeup, strenuous exercise, and excessive sun exposure while your skin recovers.
- 6
Results build (a series of 3 to 6)
Skin may begin to look brighter within the first few weeks, while improvements in texture and overall skin quality develop gradually as new collagen forms. Most treatment plans include a series of 3 to 6 sessions spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, based on your skin and treatment goals.

See how your skin responds
A single microneedling session can be a good starting point for seeing how your skin responds to treatment. Some patients notice early improvements within a few weeks, while collagen remodeling and more visible results develop gradually over time.
4 to 6 wk
Build the series
Microneedling sessions are typically spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart at GENEVA, allowing time for your skin to recover and collagen remodeling to progress between treatments. Many treatment plans include a series of 3 to 6 sessions based on your skin concerns and goals.
2 to 3 / yr
Ongoing maintenance
After your initial series, your provider may recommend 2 to 3 maintenance sessions per year based on your skin, goals, and how your results develop. Your maintenance plan is personalized rather than one-size-fits-all.
