What Microneedling Is and How It Works

MICRONEEDLING, ALSO KNOWN AS COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY, USES ULTRA FINE MEDICAL GRADE NEEDLES TO CREATE CONTROLLED MICROCHANNELS IN THE SKIN. These micro-injuries trigger the skin’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

When performed on its own, microneedling works through your skin’s natural healing response rather than adding volume or altering your features. Results develop gradually as new collagen forms. Over time, skin texture may appear smoother, acne scars softer, pores less noticeable, and the complexion more even.

Because microneedling works mechanically rather than using heat or light, it can be an option for a wide range of skin tones. Treatment depth is adjusted based on the area being treated, your skin, and your specific concerns.

Topical numbing goes on first, and we let it work.
Your provider explains how microneedling works. Turn the sound on.

Is Microneedling right for you?

Microneedling can be a good option for many healthy adults. Here’s how it may help with common skin concerns and what we consider before recommending treatment.

Microneedling can soften the appearance of depressed acne scars over a series of treatments by stimulating new collagen in the treated skin.
Fine lines may soften as microneedling stimulates new collagen. Deeper lines caused by facial movement may be better addressed with a neuromodulator.
Microneedling can improve the appearance of stretch marks by stimulating collagen remodeling, though they may require a longer treatment series.
Microneedling can improve rough skin texture and make enlarged pores appear less noticeable as collagen remodeling occurs.
Because microneedling does not rely on heat or light, it can be an option for a wide range of skin tones. Your provider will evaluate your skin and adjust treatment appropriately.
If your skin has lost some of its glow, microneedling can help improve overall texture and tone for a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

Microneedling With or Without PRF Serum

Microneedling can be performed on its own or paired with PRF as part of a personalized treatment plan. Your aesthetician will recommend the approach based on your skin concerns, treatment goals, and overall skin health.

Both options use the same microneedling technique. PRF is an optional addition rather than a separate treatment, and your provider will discuss whether it is appropriate for your specific concerns.

What to Expect: Before, During and After

A microneedling appointment at GENEVA typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, including numbing time. Here’s what to expect before, during, and after your treatment.

  1. 1

    Preparation (before your visit)

Follow your provider’s instructions on when to pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, or other active skincare before treatment, and avoid excessive sun exposure. Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids 5 to 7 days before your appointment. Arrive with clean skin and no makeup. Let us know if you have a history of cold sores or any active skin concerns before your appointment.

  2. 2

    Consultation and skin analysis

Your aesthetician assesses your skin, reviews your health history and goals, and creates a personalized treatment plan, including the recommended number of sessions and how far apart to schedule them.

  3. 3

    Numbing (about 20 minutes)

A topical numbing cream is applied and given time to take effect, helping make the treatment more comfortable. We don’t rush this step.

  1. 4

The treatment (20 to 30 minutes)

A medical-grade microneedling device passes over each treatment area, with needle depth adjusted based on the area and your specific skin concerns. Most patients describe the sensation as light pressure and mild vibration.

  2. 5

    Immediately after

Mild redness commonly improves within 24 to 48 hours, although recovery varies by patient and treatment intensity. Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your GENEVA team, which may include avoiding makeup, strenuous exercise, and excessive sun exposure while your skin recovers.

  3. 6

Results build (a series of 3 to 6)

Skin may begin to look brighter within the first few weeks, while improvements in texture and overall skin quality develop gradually as new collagen forms. Most treatment plans include a series of 3 to 6 sessions spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, based on your skin and treatment goals.

Treatment Frequency

How Often and Why

See how your skin responds

A single microneedling session can be a good starting point for seeing how your skin responds to treatment. Some patients notice early improvements within a few weeks, while collagen remodeling and more visible results develop gradually over time.

4 to 6 wk

Build the series

Microneedling sessions are typically spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart at GENEVA, allowing time for your skin to recover and collagen remodeling to progress between treatments. Many treatment plans include a series of 3 to 6 sessions based on your skin concerns and goals.

2 to 3 / yr

Ongoing maintenance

After your initial series, your provider may recommend 2 to 3 maintenance sessions per year based on your skin, goals, and how your results develop. Your maintenance plan is personalized rather than one-size-fits-all.

Skin Rejuvenation & Anti-Aging at Geneva Exosome Therapy in Alpharetta

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses ultra-fine needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the skin’s natural healing response and support new collagen and elastin production, helping improve skin texture and the appearance of scars and fine lines over time.

Microneedling can help improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, stretch marks, and overall skin quality. Your GENEVA provider will evaluate your skin and recommend a treatment plan based on the concerns you want to address. Microneedling is commonly used for scars, enlarged pores, stretch marks, and overall texture improvement.

Most patients describe microneedling as light pressure, vibration, or mild discomfort rather than significant pain. At GENEVA, a topical numbing cream is applied before treatment to help keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

Many microneedling treatment plans at GENEVA include 3 to 6 sessions spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, depending on your skin concerns and goals. Acne scars, stretch marks, and more advanced texture concerns may require a longer series. Your provider will recommend the number and frequency of treatments during your consultation.

Microneedling results develop gradually as new collagen forms. Some patients notice early improvements in skin tone or texture within a few weeks, while more visible changes continue developing over the following months. Results and timing vary based on your skin, treatment area, and number of sessions.

Microneedling typically involves minimal downtime. Redness, sensitivity, tightness, or mild swelling can occur after treatment and usually improve over the following days. Many patients can return to normal activities quickly, although you should wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup and follow your provider’s specific aftercare instructions.

Microneedling can be appropriate for a wide range of skin types and tones because it does not rely on heat or light. However, it is not right for everyone, and temporary or longer-lasting pigmentation changes, infection, and other side effects are possible. Your provider will evaluate your skin, medical history, and current skin conditions before recommending treatment.

Follow your provider’s instructions about pausing retinoids, exfoliating acids, or other active skincare before microneedling. Avoid excessive sun exposure and arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Tell your provider about active acne or skin infections, a history of cold sores, medications, and medical conditions that could affect your treatment.

After microneedling, follow the aftercare plan provided by your GENEVA team. Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours, limit direct sun exposure, and avoid irritating skincare ingredients while your skin is sensitive. You may also be advised to avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sweating during the early recovery period.

Microneedling and chemical peels rejuvenate the skin in different ways. Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled microchannels that stimulate collagen remodeling, while a chemical peel uses a chemical solution to remove damaged outer layers of skin. Microneedling is often chosen for concerns such as acne scars, enlarged pores, and uneven texture, while chemical peels may be recommended for surface texture, discoloration, and other concerns. Your GENEVA provider can recommend the better option based on your skin and goals.

Yes. Microneedling, Botox, and dermal fillers can be part of the same overall aesthetic treatment plan, but they may need to be scheduled separately depending on the treatment areas, your skin, and your goals. Your GENEVA provider will recommend the appropriate sequence and timing rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
