What Dermal Fillers Are and How They Work
DERMAL FILLERS ARE INJECTABLE GELS THAT RESTORE VOLUME BENEATH THE SKIN. Most of the fillers we use are made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar your body already produces to hold water and give tissue its cushion. As that natural supply falls with age, the face loses support and lines that were once only visible with movement start to sit there permanently.
Filler replaces that lost structure. Placed with the right depth and technique it lifts a flattened cheek, sharpens a soft jawline, softens a nasolabial fold or shapes a lip without changing the way you look. Results are visible immediately and settle fully over about two weeks.

Hyaluronic Acid vs. Biostimulators
Not all fillers work the same way. Hyaluronic acid adds volume immediately and can be dissolved if you want it reversed. Biostimulators work more slowly by prompting your own collagen production. Your provider recommends based on the area, the result you want and how much change you are comfortable with.

What to Expect: Before, During and After
A filler appointment at GENEVA typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. Here is the process from preparation through to maintenance.

Preparation (before your visit)
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and blood thinning supplements such as ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil and vitamin E for 3 to 5 days before your visit, since all of them increase bruising. Arrive with clean skin and tell us about any cold sore history before lip treatment.

Consultation and facial mapping
Your provider assesses your face as a whole structure, discusses your goals and explains which areas actually drive the change you want. Sometimes that is not the area you came in asking about, and we will say so.

The treatment (20 to 30 minutes)
We book a full hour so none of this is rushed. Topical numbing is applied first and most of our fillers also contain lidocaine. Product is placed with a needle or a blunt cannula depending on the area, in small increments, sitting you up to check the result as we build it rather than at the end.

Immediately after
Mild swelling, redness and occasional bruising are normal, particularly in the lips. Apply ice, sleep with your head elevated, skip intense exercise for 24 hours and avoid heat such as saunas for 48 hours. Before you leave, our physician checks in on you and reviews the result.

Results settle (about two weeks)
The result is visible right away but swelling can mask the true shape for the first week. We assess the final outcome at around two weeks and make any refinement then.

Your two week follow up
We book a two week review for every patient, once swelling has settled and the true shape has appeared, and we refine then if anything needs it. Duration depends on the product and the area, roughly 6 to 18 months. Lips metabolize faster than a jawline or a cheek, so we plan your next visit around how your result is holding rather than a fixed calendar date.
