Acne scars, explained

Why acne scars need the right plan

Acne scars come in different shapes. Rolling scars are broad and shallow, boxcar scars have sharper edges, and ice pick scars are narrow and deep. Most people have a mix, and each type responds to a different treatment.

Fractional CO2 resurfaces the skin in thousands of tiny points and builds new collagen underneath, which softens the edges of scars over time. Microneedling creates tiny channels that remodel the skin with less downtime.

At GENEVA we use , an FDA-cleared laser made in Italy by DEKA and used by leading aesthetic and medical practices across North America and Europe.

Your treatment day, step by step

  1. 1

    Before: get your skin ready

Your provider gives you a simple plan. You may start a skin product about 4 weeks before, and stop retinol and exfoliating acids 5 to 7 days before. Avoid tanning.

  2. 2

    Numbing, about 30 minutes

A numbing cream goes on first, and we give it time to work before we start.

  3. 3

The laser, 20 to 30 minutes

Our medical cooling system blows chilled air over your skin the whole time to keep you comfortable. Your provider checks on you throughout.

  4. 4

    Home the same day

You leave with written aftercare and a number to call or text with any questions while you heal.

What recovery looks like

It depends on the treatment, and we plan your sessions around your calendar.

Microneedling
Pink, slightly tight skin for 24 to 48 hours after each session.
Fractional CO2
About 3 to 7 days of healing after each session, as fresh new skin comes through.
The next months
Scars keep softening as new collagen forms, through the series and beyond.

Is it right for me?

Acne scar treatment is a popular choice for people who want smoother texture and more even-looking skin after years of breakouts.

At your complimentary skin analysis, your provider looks at your scar types, your skin type and tone and your treatment history, and builds the plan that fits you.

If you still have active breakouts, we calm those first, with treatments like our acne therapy facial, so scar treatment works on clear skin. Tell us if you take or recently took isotretinoin (Accutane) and we’ll time your plan around it.

Acne scars usually can’t be erased completely, but treatment can make them significantly less noticeable. How much improvement you see depends on the scar type and depth, your skin and the treatment used.

Neither is best for every scar. Fractional CO2 gives more intensive resurfacing, while microneedling remodels the skin with less recovery. Many plans combine the two. Your provider recommends the right mix for your scars.

It depends on your scars and the treatment. A CO2 series is usually three sessions over three months, and a microneedling series six sessions over six months. Your provider tells you the number at your skin analysis.

We make comfort a priority. A numbing cream goes on first, and during laser treatment our medical cooling system blows chilled air over your skin to keep you comfortable. You may feel some warmth and prickling.

We usually calm active acne first, so it doesn’t create new scars and scar treatment works on clear skin. Your provider plans both together.

Improvement builds gradually as your skin heals and makes new collagen. Some changes show within weeks, and fuller results develop over several months through your series.

Schedule a consultation for an honest assessment of your scar type and what improvement is realistically achievable.
