What Is Morpheus8?
Morpheus8 is a brand of radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device, made by InMode, that uses tiny needles to deliver heat into and under the skin. The heat triggers a healing response that builds new collagen and elastin. It is used for loose skin, wrinkles, rough texture and acne scars on the face and body.
The FDA cleared Morpheus8 as a prescription Class II device through its 510(k) process. The FDA calls RF microneedling a medical procedure, not a cosmetic treatment, and in October 2025 warned of reported serious complications, including burns, scarring, fat loss and nerve damage.

How Does Morpheus8 Work?
Morpheus8 works by pairing microneedling with RF energy, so heat reaches the deeper layers where collagen is made. Its 24 coated needles reach into the tissue under the skin, and each needle tip produces a small area of intense heat. That heat contracts the deep dermis and connective tissue, coagulates fat, and stimulates new collagen and elastin. The clinician sets the depth and energy; one published protocol uses 1 to 2 mm on the face and 3 to 4 mm on the body.
What Does Morpheus8 Treat, and Who Is It For?
Morpheus8 is mainly used to tighten mildly loose skin and smooth texture without surgery. Studied uses include:
- Early facial aging: jowls and loose neck skin, and laxity that returns after a facelift
- Tightening: RF microneedling studies found tightening especially on the lower face, jawline and neck
- Acne scars: the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that RF plus microneedling can make acne scars less noticeable than either alone
The AAD says skin tightening works best with a small amount of sagging skin, a stable, healthy weight, no smoking and sun protection. With a lot of sagging skin, tightening may not help.
What to Expect Before, During and After Morpheus8
Before
Your clinician screens your health history. People with a history of cold sores may be given an antiviral first. You may be asked to pause retinoids for a few days and avoid sun.
During
Numbing cream may be applied for 45 to 60 minutes. Minor pinpoint bleeding can occur.
After
Antibiotic ointment is typically used, and makeup and sunscreen wait until the needle holes close, within 1 to 3 days.
Morpheus8 Results and How Long They Last
Morpheus8 results build gradually, because new collagen takes time to form. A critical review found that remodeling after RF microneedling continues to improve even 6 months after treatment.
- A 2026 systematic review of 20 facial RF microneedling studies (558 participants), partly written by RF device company staff, found consistent improvement in texture and tightening.
- One study in that review confirmed objective tightening for up to six months, and the FDA notes that results may be temporary.
Morpheus8 Risks and Side Effects
Most side effects of RF microneedling devices such as Morpheus8 are mild and short-lived, but serious injuries have been reported.
- Common: redness and swelling that usually resolve within hours to days, plus possible bruising and crusting
- Less common: darker or lighter skin patches, cold sore flare-ups and infection
- Serious: burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage, sometimes needing surgical repair. A review of FDA reports from 2020 to 2025 found 86 involving RF microneedling devices, most often for fat loss, scarring and lingering redness.
In an InMode-funded series of 247 patients treated with Morpheus8 plus another RF device for neck laxity and jowls, 4.8% had swelling beyond 6 weeks and 1.2% had temporary nerve injury. All resolved without further treatment.
The FDA clearance limits energy above 62 mJ per pin to skin types I to IV. The AAD calls RF microneedling safe for all skin tones, though studies comparing it with lasers included few people with darker skin.
Who Shouldn't Have Morpheus8?
Based on FDA cautions for microneedling devices and published contraindications, Morpheus8 may not be right for you if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have a skin infection, rash or cold sore outbreak
- You have a weakened immune system or uncontrolled diabetes
- You have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners
- You form keloid scars, heal poorly or have a collagen disorder
- You have taken isotretinoin in the past 6 months
- You are tanned or plan sun exposure in the next two weeks
